All Done – Heading to ICU as Planned

Highlights from post-op debrief with the surgeon:

  • Sandi’s belly is closed up and she’s in the recovery room. She was stable throughout the whole operation. We expect to be able to see her in one hour.
  • She didn’t require any blood transfusions.
  • The surgeon got “grossly clear margins” around the tumor.
    • This means that he was able to take extra tissue all the way around, which reduces the chances of leaving cancer behind. Yay.
    • He felt confident that the margins were clear for the IVC. Yay.
    • The pathologist will sample randomly the rest of the tumor to determine if there is evidence of microscopic disease. One week wait. Prayers and good juju for no evidence would be awesome. (side note … technology should exist that determines presence of disease across the entire tumor, rather than one person doing a visual check with random samples.)
  • She is expected to be in the ICU for 1 day, and the hospital for 5-6 days.
  • She can leave the hospital when she can “eat, drink, pee, poo and walk normally,  and have pain under control with oral pain meds”.  These criteria suggest that I should be in hospital much more often.

  1. I agree eat normally, drink normally, pee normally, poo normally and walk normally is a tall order even for someone who hasn’t had surgery. This all sounds like REALLY good news. Thank God! Your whole family including Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Mark and the girls have been in my thoughts all day. Please let us know if you need anything. We are happy to drive the girls over if you want. ANYTHING.

  2. OMG! I’ve been refreshing this page every 10 mins since 2:30 pm PT. This is by far the best news I’ve got today or this week or this month or over a much longer period! Praying for that one week-ish outcome to be as good as we want and need it to be! Knowing Sandi, I’d expect her to go for a run in one week. Those people at the hospital need to be warned – overachiever in their facility.

  3. And oh yah, I’m pretty sure Sandi doesn’t do anything JUST normally. She does everything with extra effort for the A! So you go Sandi, eat exceptionally, drink exceptionally, pee exceptionally, poo exceptionally, and walk exceptionally!

  5. yay, yay……..the best outcome ever!….hospital food is getting pretty good nowadays I heard!! Don’t smuggle in too many fancy dishes as other patients might get jealeous! Saw the look of the IV patient next to Dr Rich as he was showing off the snack!!…Praise be to the Lord for His mercy. Pray for no more chemo…

  7. Oh man, Sandi’s gonna be so pissed when she finds out she didn’t lose half of her liver and gall bladder and her weight, therefore, is 2 pounds off than what she expected! 😉 Break it to her gently, Sacha. Lol!

We continue to pray for you all and are always grateful to Him for ALL THINGS!

  9. Congratulations for a successful surgery! It’s good to know that “enough tissues” have been removed. A friend of mine got sarcoma over ten years ago but didn’t have enough tissues removed. Prayers for “no evidence” and stable recovery.
